Gym, Boot Camp, or Personal Trainer

Gym, Boot Camp or Personal Trainer - How To Choose

Thinking about finding a gym to lose weight and get in shape? There are so many options available nowadays that you can get lost if you're new to fitness.

If you've come across this post, you're likely doing one of the following:

Looking for a Daytona Beach gym?
Looking for a Port Orange gym?
Looking for an Ormond Beach gym?
Looking for a New Smyrna Beach gym?

When it comes to getting in shape or losing weight, there's lots to like about joining a local gym. First off, it's quick and easy to join one.  In as little as 5 minutes you can determine your payment option, sign the paperwork, and be on the treadmill warming up!

When joining a gym, most people are concerned primarily with proximity.  "What are the gyms near me?" or "How far is this gym from my home?" address

With gyms it really is all about location, location, location.

If you’re thinking about hiring a personal trainer that works for a gym, you want to be thorough in checking them out before signing any long term contracts.  A common scenario at the big gyms is that your main contact with the personal training department is the head trainer…who gets that position by being the best salesperson.

They'll build rapport, take you through a workout, sign you up....and hand you over to the 17 year-old new guy.  This isn't always the case.  But it happens alot.

Boot Camp

If joining a local gym is not for you then another popular option for getting in shape is finding a fitness boot camp.  Boot camps, although lacking the amenities of most modern gyms, more than make up for this with their increased sense of community.

A similar option to a fitness boot camp is group personal training.  You can read about the differences between boot camps and group personal training here.

Personal Trainer

A third option is finding a personal trainer, whether in-home or in the gym.  I've already written a post on how to find an in-home personal trainer.  When interviewing a trainer here's a few good questions to ask:
  • Do you have a degree in Exercise Science/Kinesiology?
  • How long have you been a personal trainer?
  • What is your area(s) of specialty? (weight loss, 50+ fitness, post-pregnancy, post re-hab, etc.)
  • Is this your full-time job?
